The Oystercatcher was originally known as the \u201cSea Pie\u201d<\/strong> but was renamed in the 1730\u2019s when a naturalist observed one eating oysters. The name \u201csea pie\u201d seems to be a shortened form of Sea Magpie, due to its pied (black and white) appearance.
